Favorite Sneaker of all time?

Screen Shot 2013-11-21 at 9.58.03 PM

Nike SB Joe Strummer “Before and After” Dunks. The Clash are my favorite band of all time and love how Nike SB used Joe Strummer’s Fender Telecaster as the inspiration for these kicks.

What got you started in sneakers?

I have always loved sneakers due to my cousin always being into sneakers and collecting them himself, but I was never able to get nice sneakers because I never had any money to buy them. When I got to college and found a job, I had extra money and because of that, I was finally able to get the sneakers I had missed out on for all these years.

Favorite Sneaker of all time?

My favorite sneaker of all time is the Nike Air More Uptempo. This sneaker goes way back to before I even gave any thoughts about sneakers. I love the huge “Air” on the side. I was very young and I loved the movie “George of the Jungle”. My favorite scene was always when George unboxes those Air Uptempos and runs into the jungle. Ever since then I have had a love for that shoe.

What got you started in sneakers?

My love of sneakers comes from my favorite show of all time, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Ever since I was young, I watched the Fresh Prince every morning and just marveled at his style. Being a 90s kid, the Fresh Prince embodied everything that I wanted to be. I remember he always had the best kicks and that influenced me greatly. I was always a fan of the flashiest sneakers that I hadn’t seen anyone wearing. When I got that first pair of Air Max 90s and broke them out on the first day of school, I knew it was a wrap.

Personally, I don’t have an all time favorite, but if I had to choose, I’d go with the Adidas Real Deal. These shoes look crazy online, but about 10x better in person. The design aspects make it an amazing-looking shoe and despite its age, it is a great basketball performer with an amazing fit. Plus, I prefer being original rather than spitting out a Jordan retro model because–although they are super cool–I have never actually owned one and plenty of other people can tell you how great they are.

What got you started in sneakers?

I got into sneakers when I was around 11. I got into skate shoes and bought a pair of Skytops with my own money. Eventually I started playing basketball, and I went crazy over basketball kicks. I just kept buying shoes, looking for heat but at the same time looking for an awesome deal and an awesome performer.

My favorite sneaker of all time is the Air Jordan 5 Wolf Grey. I saw someone wearing them at a baseball game about 2 years ago and they just caught my eye. The shoe just is such a clean color way and being a fan of grey sneakers and the Jordan 5 I loved them. I bought them last year at a sneaker event, out grew them and sold them thinking I could buy a new pair easily. I have not bought a new pair because I will not pay reseller price which is near $250 for my size. Hopefully I will be able to buy a new pair eventually.

What got you started in sneakers?

I got into sneakers a few years back, I originally just liked the feeling of a fresh pair of Nikes on my feet but when I learned more and more about the Jordan culture I did a lot of research about them and really liked the stories behind the shoes. I started buying a pair here and then it really took off I was on eBay every day trying to buy a new pair of Jordan’s. When I finally saw what I did by spending all this money on Jordan’s I decided I needed to take a step away and look at different brands which brought me closer to other brands as New Balance and Adidas.

Air Jordan 1. In my opinion, the Air Jordan 1 started it all. It was a revolutionary basketball shoe that changed the game of basketball and Nike. The shoe does not only feature classic colorways but is one of the most versatile, unique but simple silhouettes of all time. It shares many characteristics with some of Nike’s most famous sneakers including the Air Force 1 and the Nike Dunk High/Low. Not only did the Air Jordan 1 make Nike memorable on the world basketball stage but it also helped Michael Jordan continue his already iconic career in basketball that ended as one of the most legendary careers of all time as well the continuation of one of the most well known and iconic brands of all time. The Air Jordan 1 is a sneaker that holds a lot of sentimental value to me. It was one of the first sneakers I ever had and it also has a lot of history associated with it.

What got you started in sneakers?

What got me into sneakers was the potential learning value of something so simple that no one would consider as being worthy of studying the history of. I remember watching a video about the Shoezeum and I was astonished at how many Nike shoes the collection featured. Over time, I exponentially increased my knowledge of sneakers as well as my interest in many Nike and Jordan models. I was and still am interested in older Nike and Jordan sneakers but I do appreciate the new releases that we receive as well. Although I mainly pay attention to Nike sneakers, I also love many models from many other brands besides Nike/Jordan as they are classic and memorable as well. My collection is very small, and although I am thankful for everything that I have, I wish to have a bigger one in the future. All in all, I buy what I think is worth it and what I like.

The Lebron 9 Big Bang for the model and the colorway. Huge fan of that bright orange.

What got you started in sneakers?

I got into sneakers almost a year ago now. I started my first year of basketball and I needed some new sneakers. We didn’t have a lot of money for the higher priced sneakers so my mom brought some old Melo 8s that a friend of mine grew out of. After that I started watching videos on performance and some reviews and the rest is history.

Bred 1. The shoe that got me into shoes. Best silhouette of an shoe and my favorite color combination. To me, cleanest sneaker of all time.

What got you started in sneakers?

I got into shoes after years of playing basketball and watching, athletes shoes stuck out to me. Especially while i was watching Lebron, when he wore the 9, i really liked it. I eventually started looking at and buying more shoes, and that’s basically how i got into shoes!

Reebok Kamikaze l (quite obvious from my articles 🙂 I think it is the best looking sneaker Reebok ever created. S.Kemp was one of my favorite players, he was unstoppable. The design was so radical at the time (94) I was blown away, growing up in Europe, Reebok was much more popular than Nike at that time, so naturally Reebok was my brand back than.

What got you started in sneakers?

I grew up in a country that just came out of a 45 year communist regime, back in 1990-1991, I was 14 at that time, a lot of companies came to the country that were never seen before, the western influence was full on.

At the end of the summer of 1991, I was coming back on a train from my grandparents house after spending the summer away. Walking back from the train station in to the city and about half way trough, I saw a guy in about 100 feet away from me, moving the opposite direction, he had something on his feet that I have never seen before.

When he got closer, I noticed a big bright round object on his sneakers tongue and it was written ” The Pump”!!! I was so amazed, shoes that have a pump on them, I instantly thought that the pump actually pumps your midsole and makes you jump higher, funny me. I stood there for a good 2-3 minutes keep staring at his feet while he was passing and going away…Later on I found out that were the Pump AXT Cross Training.

And after that I developed my obsession for sneakers, here my story is very similar to yours, my parents did not have the money to buy me sneakers that where costing as much as my mom’s monthly salary. So the next 2-3 years I spent in pain, I got to learn all the models out there, all names and technology, Reebok, Nike, JB, Converse, Adidas, it didn’t meter for me, I would go after school with my friends to every single store in town to check if there are new models, and be able to hold them in my hands at least for a little bit. All the store employees knew us by names by the end of the first year, it was sad. I managed to get all my classmates in the same hype, sort of speak, to love and crave sneakers. Finally the summer before my senior year, I worked at a farm for 3 months, just to get enough money to buy one pair of kicks. It was the happiest day of my life, at the time, September 10, 1994 and it was the Reebok Above The Rim Spector ST.

Slowly, with time I was able to buy, pairs that I like, but it was always a pair per year or less. When I moved to the States 10 years a go, and finally had a lot more money than before, and the retro game was picking up, I started collecting.

And same as you, I collect, I stock and only rock a few pairs, and I do it for the exactly same reasons, you do. I just want to preserve the way they look as long as possible, having the memories from the past, can’t allow my self to destroy them. I know its a condition, you know it too, but who cares, as long as it makes us happy and our wife’s are not killing us for it 🙂

Toro Bravo pack (2009). Everything about this pack I love. From the packaging to the 3M upper to the All red everything. I have a weakness for red shoes and I still remember seeing pictures for these shoes back in the day and lusting after them. To me this is the perfect pack of Jordans. As I expand the brands that I grace my feet with, this will always be the one I hold above all the rest. Unfortunately, I was unable to cop, and hope that they either retro these or I can find a DS pack in a size 13 for a reasonable price (shameless plug). The pack transports me back to a time when I was still a fledgling sneaker head, and was not jaded by the certain transformations of the culture. This pack is love.

What got you started in sneakers?

Sneakers were something that i admired from a distance up until college, when I turned 18. Before then they were frivolous to my mom who controlled the wardrobe money, so at best 1 or 2 pairs of And1’s a year (I had a pair of all blue joints that I thought were the flyest things created haha. Oh how far I have come). To banish sneakers to an even further place in my awareness, I did not have any friends who were into shoes, and did not start paying attention to basketball until high school. Ignorant bliss defined my relationship with sneakers until 2006.

In 2006 I was a senior in high school, and one of my best friends was the biggest sneaker head I knew (retired sneakerhead now, although I am trying to coerce back into the game). While I admired his collection from a far, funds really were never right for me and i lived vicariously through his own addiction. Around this time is when the Air Jordan 4 Military Blue’s retroed, and everything changed. Instead of just admiring from the sideline I wanted to be in it. I loved the model, the 4’s are still an all time favorite. The colors were exactly what I needed to light my fire. When my friend bought his pair and I saw them, held them, experienced that first meeting, I was hooked. I was not able to get a pair for myself, and that is when I knew that I couldn’t let that feeling go.Last year when the Military 4’s retroed I finally got to experience what it would be like to be with my the shoe that started it all.

Favorite sneaker in my collection. Hands down the West NYC x New Balance MT580 “Alpine Guide”. Why? Many reasons. First of all, the materials are so nice! The colorway is CRAZY! Speckling is AMAZING! The shoe is so confortable! The main reason though was the hunt for the shoe.

What got you started in sneakers?

How got into sneakers? Basically. I didn’t get shoes in high school. I was rockin the same pair of K Swiss for four years. Once I got a job, that all changed. I got into kicks in 2012 (kicksstarter12) and that year Jordans were trash. The materials they used were horrible. My first pair of Jordan’s was the Military Blue 4s that released summer 2012. I was basically a hypebeast after that. I copped everything. Then I realized near the end of summer 2012 I had around 20-30 sneakers (I had around 2-3 shoes in the beginning). I didn’t want to be a person who got every release just to say I got it. So I sold most of that collection. I buy what I like now. I have worn all my sneakers in the collection at least once. I have around 20ish sneakers/shoes. Brands I have in my collection so far Nike, Jordan, Reebok, New Balance, On, Vans, Asics, and Keep. If you have other brand suggestions let me know.

Favorite Sneaker of all time

My favorite shoe is the nike free series because they are really comfortable, stylish and good for being active. They also are not so expensive and that is good since all my money is going to college applications right now. But, I would like to own the whole Kobe 8 line eventually.

What got you started in sneakers?

I got into sneakers because I enjoy style. I always want to match my shoes with what ever I wear. I want the colors to be cohesive in an outfit but not too overwhelming. I always liked shoes since I was little because my parents used to buy me jordans and nikes. Then, I started playing sports and I enjoyed sneakers more. Anyways, I have just scraped the surface of the “Sneaker Game” with releases and online purchases. I have begin to watch youtube the past 2 years and have interacted with some great people. Therefore, I enjoy the performance of the shoes and the style as well.
