With all of the talk on the “Forging Iron” Lebron 11 lately, we can’t help but to draw parallels to the Lebron 9 AS Galaxy “Big Bang” sneaker, with its vibrant orange upper. It makes me start thinking about the Nike Basketball All Star Pack themes, and what will the 2014 AS Pack look like?  What will it be themed after?  The AS Pack is always fun an exciting, and Nike goes all out with these designs, much more flashy that a typical General Release.

Here is a vid I made discussing this topic:

Here is a head to head view of the AS 2012 “Galaxy” pack vs AS 2013 “Area 72” pack via sneakernews:

The 2012 NBA Allstar Game was held in Orlando Florida.  Home of the Kennedy Space Center, it is fitting that the theme was “Galaxy” Inspired.  Info below via press release

“Nike Basketball celebrates its pinnacle athletes competing in the 2012 NBA All-Star Game in Orlando later this month with a special lineup of footwear. Inspired by space exploration, the collection features a galactic theme on the LeBron 9, Zoom KD IV and Kobe VII System. The graphics pay homage to the supernova, arguably the most powerful force in the universe, while the outsoles glow in the dark and ‘mission patches’ adorn each shoe as a nod to the accolades astronauts receive.”

From the state of Ohio, home to more astronauts than any other state, LeBron James will wear a special version of the LeBron 9 that takes inspiration from the orange space suit. The most visible color to the human eye, orange helps identify astronauts. Functional graphics “Pull For Lockdown” are featured on the midfoot harness, while the materials are inspired by space suit textures. LeBron’s mission patch is a lion shooting through space.

Kevin Durant’s Zoom KD IV colorway is silver and takes inspiration from the silver suit worn by a notable Oklahoma astronaut. His mission patch pays tribute to his reign as H.O.R.S.E. champion. The functional graphics “Pull For Lockdown” on the midfoot harness is a key graphic feature.

The Kobe VII System features telescopic-inspired imagery, Supernova being the primary graphic motif on the upper. The mission patch on the heel is a mamba snake as a nod to Kobe.

All three editions will be available at select retailers and at beginning February 25.

In 2013, the NBA Allstar Game was held in Houston Texas, info about the theme was found via Nike HERE

“Driven by the creative vision of Nike Basketball’s color lead Eugene Rogers and graphic extraordinaire Erick Goto, this 2013 collection specially built for Houston pushes the limits with meaningful, in-depth storylines.

The team dove into Houston’s space lineage to create a fictitious basketball universe led by Nike’s elite three players – it was an intricate, creative and fun project intended to celebrate the game’s best.

The space concept also comes to life through select Nike Basketball apparel including the Nike Hyper Elite Galaxy shorts and collection of three t-shirts for James, Bryant and Durant.

Nike Basketball has also joined forces with Nike Sportswear to create a special product collection based around Area 72, a top-secret facility where shoes take on a life of their own.

The Nike Basketball shoes specially engineered for Houston – KOBE 8 SYSTEM, KD V and LEBRON X – will be available beginning February 15 at select retail stores and at”

So where does this lead us for 2014?  The 2014 NBA All Star Game will be February 16, 2014 at New Orleans Arena in New Orleans!  Now immediately we have to be thinking “Mardi Gras” pack?  But does that really sound like a realistic approach?  When I think of New Orleans’ I think of 3 things: Blues, Mardi Gras, and Katrina.  It is hard to predict if they will use any of these as inspiration for designs, especially Katrina.  Will they go back to the Galaxy / Alien style cosmic theme?  Or something else out of the box?  What are your predictions?  Either way I am very excited to see where they take this year’s theme!  Historically the All Star 2014 announcement happens at the end of January.
