To Tumble or Not to Tumble, That is the Question

With the recent images we’ve all seen of the upcoming 2017 Air Jordan 1 “Royal”, there has been some mixed reaction I must say as far as how people feel about them.

Much like the Air Jordan 1 “Banned”/”Bred” that released not too long ago, the 2017 Royals look to come equipped with similar looking tumbled leather.  The royal blue also seems a little deeper and darker than previous releases (like the 2016 Banneds/Breds), at least based on the images I’ve seen.

OG heads seem to not like the heavy use of tumbled leather, as it takes away from the OG look of the sneaker.  They seem to prefer and desire a smooth leather look, like the type found on this years Black Toe 1s or Top 3s.

On the other side of the coin, you have those who prefer the more premium looking and feeling materials.  The tumbled finish also allows for less noticeable creasing, which is a debate in itself.

To be completely frank though, using tumbled leather doesn’t always mean it’s a high quality premium leather.  Tumbled leather can still be thin, stiff, and cheap feeling.  You really have to look beyond the surface of the material.

Are you looking forward to the 2017 Air Jordan 1 “Royal”, or is it a disappointment considering the faint resemblance to the OG?  It will be interesting to see if Jordan Brand continues the heavy use of tumbled leather on retros that originally didn’t have it or if they are strictly utilizing tumbled leather on the OG 1s.  I guess time will tell.
